⚓️ Duluth’s Hidden Ship Bridge: Many Great Lakes Fans Have Never Seen This 1912 Bridge Swing Open

Most people who follow ships in Duluth, Minnesota know the famous Aerial Lift Bridge, but there is another historic bridge in the Duluth Superior Harbor that many Great Lakes ship watchers have never seen in action.

Vibe with Mike takes you out on the boat to experience the Grassy Point Swing Bridge from the water. We call the bridge operator over marine radio and request an opening, then watch as this incredible bridge built in 1912 actually swings open to allow us to pass through.

You’ll see the entire process from beginning to end, including the radio communication, the bridge beginning to move, the opening becoming large enough for our boat, and our passage through the bridge.

Along the way, we explore the history of the Grassy Point Swing Bridge and why it remains an important part of the interaction between marine and railroad traffic in the Duluth Superior Harbor. Unlike the Aerial Lift Bridge, this bridge rotates horizontally to clear the waterway.

For Great Lakes ship watchers, railroad fans, Duluth visitors, and anyone interested in the incredible infrastructure surrounding Lake Superior, this is a side of Duluth that many people never get to experience from the water.

Duluth’s Smokiest Day Ever? Lifelong Residents Say They’ve Never Seen Wildfire Smoke Like This | Great Lakes Vessel Arrives

On July 16, 2026, the Clyde S. VanEnkevort and Erie Trader arrived in Duluth through some of the densest wildfire smoke many longtime residents say they have ever witnessed.

Numerous elderly Duluth residents, including people in their 80s and families who have lived in the city for generations, described it as possibly the smokiest day in Duluth history. Some said they had never experienced anything remotely like it. The smoke was so thick across the Duluth-Superior Harbor that it looked more like heavy fog, dramatically reducing visibility and nearly swallowing the vessel as it arrived.

Despite official warnings advising people to limit outdoor activity and remain inside because of the hazardous air quality, a small group of die-hard ship watchers still lined the pier to witness the arrival. This video captures an unprecedented view of the Clyde S. VanEnkevort and Erie Trader moving through a harbor almost completely consumed by wildfire smoke.

You will see the vessel gradually emerge through the dense haze, the crew continuing their work in extremely smoky conditions, and a side of the Duluth Harbor that even lifelong residents say they have never seen before.

Enjoy this remarkable Great Lakes vessel arrival, but please take the dangerous conditions seriously. Anyone affected by the wildfire smoke should follow official air-quality guidance, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, and stay indoors whenever possible.

Great Lakes Has a Brand New U.S. Coast Guard Commander

See link for full story and ceremony video

This Fourth of July, as we celebrate America's 250th birthday, I wanted to share a very special moment that I had the honor of witnessing.

The video from this week captures the unforgettable moment Don Rudnickas was officially promoted to Commander in the United States Coast Guard. Standing beside him were his wonderful family, including his brother, his proud mother and father, as they pinned on his command insignia. It was one of those moments that reminds you what service to our country is really all about.

I've had the privilege of getting to know Don, and anyone who knows him will tell you the same thing. He's a humble leader who puts his crew first, genuinely cares about the people around him, and leads with integrity every single day. For nearly 20 years, he has answered the call whenever his country needed him, never seeking recognition, only focused on serving others.

It was also an honor to attend the ceremony alongside so many of Don's Coast Guard shipmates, including Master Chief Petty Officer Justin Olson, Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station Duluth.

The video attached to this post lets you experience this special milestone exactly as it happened. It's a proud moment not only for Don and his family, but for the entire Duluth Coast Guard community.

On this Independence Day, I have one simple request. Please take a moment to congratulate Don and thank him for his service. Leaders like Don quietly dedicate their lives to protecting others without asking for recognition, and they deserve our gratitude not just today, but every day.

Don, congratulations on your promotion to Commander. Thank you for your friendship, your leadership, your humility, and your commitment to serving our country. You've earned the respect of so many people, and we're all proud of you.
