On May 4, new sod was being laid at the Lake Superior Maritime Museum plaza in Duluth, Minnesota as construction continues to transform the space. In a great Duluth moment, crew members paused their work to take pictures and watch the Great Lakes ship James L. Oberstar pass right by.
Just after 11 PM on May 3, about a dozen people lined the north pier in Duluth, Minnesota, smelt fishing under the glow of bright lights along Lake Superior. From a distance, the scene was fascinating to watch as nets dipped into the water and came up again and again.
Smelt fishing is a popular spring tradition in Minnesota, where people use handheld dip nets to catch small fish called smelt as they move into shallow shoreline waters at night. Fishermen often use lights to attract the fish, creating a unique and lively nighttime scene along the lake.

Around 8:30 this morning in Duluth, a fisherman hooked into a fish on the south pier along Lake Superior. Another angler nearby came over with an extra long net to help land it, which made for a pretty cool moment to watch. Feels like a real sign that spring fishing is getting going across Minnesota.
