Switching scenes issue

Has anyone dealt with an issue when they're switching scenes where the volume jumps a little bit?

For example, I have a scene that's a distorted amp, and one that's a clean amp, the "split" is the change in the scene. I have it go 100% distorted in one, and in the "clean" scene it goes 100% to the clean amp.

But it seems like when I switch from the clean to the distortion, it jumps in volume a bit. Maybe because the volume is different between the two?

Recording/Reamping with the Quad Cortex

I've been running into an issue when reamping with the Quad Cortex as the interface. Reaper is my DAW of choice, and all of the routing is set correctly per the user manual's instructions.

When I track one of the guitars, I have two tracks: one DI & one amp tone. After the initial tracking sounds good and the take is good, I want to audition an additional amp tone. So I route the DI out to USB 5 and change the IN on my first row to USB 5. The output is set to the first option, **"Multi Output ..." (**It's set this way so that you can audition different tones while the DI is playing in the DAW. No monitoring is happening on the DAW side for latency reasons).

When I then played the song in the DAW, with the DI reamped through the cortex and back into the DAW, the signal level was fine, and the tone sounded great on its own. But when I'd play it back with the first amp tone from the first pass, things would be pretty out of phase. And not in a way that was solved by just flipping the phase, or even using Waves' InPhase or Reaper's built-in phase alignment.

Configurations that I've tried:

  • Config 1:
    • DI & Head 1 --> stereo cab --> Multi output --> Only recorded "Wet Signal L" in DAW
    • Head 2 --> stereo cab --> Multi output --> Only recorded "Wet Signal L" in DAW
  • Config 2:
    • DI & Head 1 --> Mono cab (hard panned L) --> Multi output --> Only recorded "Wet Signal L" in DAW
    • Head 2 --> Mono cab (hard panned R) --> Multi output --> Only recorded "Wet Signal L" in DAW
  • Config 3:
    • DI & Head 1 --> Mono cab --> Multi output --> Only recorded "Wet Signal L" in DAW
    • Head 2 --> Mono cab --> Multi output --> USB 3 (mono? maybe?) --> Mono track Reaper

Questions:

  1. Could the phasing issues just be that I'm using fundamentally different amp tones, and they're naturally out of phase? Not sure why they'd sound good when auditioning, but then in playback, they sound like a garbled phase-y mess.
  2. Is this a known issue with reamping, or is it just an issue with the tones in amp sims/modelers?
  3. Has anyone run into this and found a solution?
  4. Is the Cortex incapable of recording a true mono out, unless you just use the hardware outputs and go into a separate interface? FYI, I've done that plenty of times over the last couple of years and never had an issue.
    1. I very rarely have to track stereo guitar tracks, unless I'm specifically getting a heavily FX'd tone that needs something in stereo (dual delays, bigger verbs, etc)

Last note, one thing I haven't tried yet is doing two completely separate rows in the cortex, both having the same Input 1 and just tracking the DI, Row 1 and Row 2, to different tracks inside of the DAW.

Anyway, thanks for any help or tips that people here might have. This was making me want to pull my hair out the other day.

TLDR: lots of phasing issues after playing back two different amp tones, because of reamping.
