Best student dorm / hall near Pipitea for a VUW Master’s student?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to study at Victoria University of Wellington / Te Herenga Waka for the November 2026 intake. I’ll most likely be taking a Master’s degree related to Business, so my campus will be around Pipitea / Wellington School of Business and Government.

I’ll be 26 years old this year, male, and single.

I’m looking for recommendations for the best student dorms / halls near Pipitea. I’m considering staying in a dorm or hall because I want to be in an environment where I’m still around students, rather than feeling isolated in a private flat too early.

A private room is a must for me. I don’t mind a shared bathroom, and ensuite would also be nice, but the most important thing is having my own private space. I need both social time and private time. I can be social when I want to, but I also need the option to disappear and be introverted when needed hahah.

I know that Master’s degrees are usually seen as more of an “adult” degree, but deep down I’m still a child at heart hahahah. I also don’t mind being around undergrad students, as long as the environment is friendly and I still have my own room.

I’m open to both university halls and private student dorms. I’m also not sure yet whether catered or self-catered would suit me better, so I’d love to hear people’s honest opinions.

My main priorities are:

- Private room
- Student environment / social life
- Not too far from Pipitea campus
- Good access to public transport if possible
- Safe and convenient
- Suitable for international / postgraduate students
- Easy to make friends or connections
- Good overall vibe
- Not necessarily crazy party vibes, but not too isolated either

For VUW students, especially anyone studying around Pipitea, which student dorms / halls would you recommend for someone like me?

Are there any places I should consider or avoid?

Any honest experiences would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Best Place to live as a 'Pipitea Campus' VuW Students

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to study at Victoria University of Wellington around November 2026, and I believe most of my classes will be around the Pipitea Campus since I’m looking at business/postgraduate study.

I’m still very early in my research and honestly don’t know much about Wellington yet, so I’d really appreciate any advice from locals, current students, former students, or anyone who has lived around the city.

Ideally, I’d love to live somewhere close to Pipitea Campus, or at least somewhere with an easy and reliable commute. I’m trying to understand what areas are actually good to live in, not just what looks good on Google Maps.

What suburbs/areas would you recommend for a new international student?

I’d also love to know:

  • Which areas are convenient for Pipitea Campus?
  • Which areas are safe and comfortable?
  • Which places are too noisy or too expensive?
  • Are there any streets, buildings, or suburbs I should avoid?
  • How important is sunlight/heating/mould when choosing a flat in Wellington?
  • Would you recommend student accommodation, a shared flat, or renting privately?

Any honest advice, personal experiences, or things you wish you knew before moving to Wellington would be really helpful.

Thanks heaps!
