Need some help with my petite marigolds

Hi everyone!

I need some help with my petite marigolds in the front plot of my house. They look pretty patchy, and I’m getting a lot more leaves than flowers. The overall planting just doesn’t look very full or balanced.

What can I do at this point in the season to improve the appearance of the plot? Should I prune some of the foliage, add more plants, move/replant anything, or just wait for more flowers?

Any advice on how to make this area look fuller and more attractive would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Did my Johnny Jump Ups fail, or am I about to pull the wrong plants?

I’m in NYC and could use some advice on my front yard flower bed.

About two months ago, I pulled most of the weeds and scattered Petite Marigold and Johnny Jump Up seeds. The marigolds are blooming nicely now, but I haven’t seen a single Johnny Jump Up flower.

Instead, there are a lot of tall, grass-like plants growing throughout the bed. I Googled what Johnny Jump Up seedlings look like, and these don’t seem to match. Are these likely just weeds?

At this point the whole plot looks pretty messy. What’s the best way to clean it up without accidentally pulling anything I should keep? Should I remove all the grass-like plants, add mulch, plant more flowers, or wait until next season?
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

First-Time Gardener in NYC — Need Step-by-Step Help With Small Front Yard Flower Beds

Hi all, I’m completely new to gardening and could really use some beginner-friendly advice. 😊

I have two small patches of soil in front of my house in NYC, and they’ve basically just been growing weeds for years. I got tired of looking at them, so I recently mowed everything down very short.

After doing some research about easy, low-maintenance flowers, I bought:

Petite Marigold seeds
Johnny Jump-Up seeds
10 phlox plants from Costco

Now I’m honestly not sure what to do next. 😅

Could you all kindly walk me through this step by step?

Some questions I have:

Can I just scatter the seeds and leave them alone?
Or do I need to dig small holes and plant the seeds individually?
Should I remove all the weeds first?
Do I need to add new soil or fertilizer?
Should I soak the seeds in water before planting?
What’s the best placement for marigolds, Johnny Jump-Ups, and phlox?
Since the plots are pretty small, how would you arrange them?

I’m located in NYC, and the two flower beds are quite small. I’ve also included a photo of my front yard.

I’d really appreciate any simple “gardening for absolute beginners” advice. Thank you so much!
