Thermal issues and shutdown on Vector GP68 HX 13V

I bought a used MSI Vector with RTX 4080 and Intel i9-13950HX. It was upgraded to 2x32 GB DDR5 RAM by the previous owner. The laptop was bought new in July 2024.

I’m having some serious issues with it. In performance mode and cooler boost, the laptop is a gaming beast. Cyberpunk on ultra+RT on 1600p with DLSS quality - no problem. However, I want to be able to game without listening to a jet engine next to me as well. So I tried balanced mode and medium graphic settings without RT…. and the PC shut down after 10 minutes. No fps drop or any other warning, just straight from smooth gameplay to black screen and everything silent. This happens every time, with very consistent timing. All drivers and BIOS are up to date.

I’ve done some troubleshooting with help from ChatGPT. HWiNFO shows very hot CPU, but GPU looks fine. Reducing the CPU usage in control panel (first to 99% to avoid turbo boost, then 95% and 90%) have gradually increased the duration I can play before shutdown.

I suppose that the laptop may be reaching a point where changing the CPU thermal paste is beneficial, but I still think this is strange behaviour for such a powerful PC on medium settings in games.

Why isn’t the CPU throttled more to avoid shutdowns? Have anyone else had similar issue with their MSI Vector? Any solutions? Or is this a hardware issue that cannot be (or will be very expensive to) fix?

I might add that the laptop is on a stand, so airflow should be good.

Thank you all in advance 🙏
