Looking for tips on recon/artillery spotter gameplay
Title pretty much says it all. I'm looking to purchase Reforger when it goes on sale next, and want to try my hand at ArmA multiplayer for the first time. For the most part I expect to play pretty casually in my downtime, at least to begin with. Sitting on roadsides putting RPG-shaped dents into trucks, drunk-driving our own supply trucks to and from bases, outposts, and the like, and joining ad-hoc teams to go bumble off to wherever and try our hand at one mission or another, with the occasional time spent offline trying to relearn the math needed to use mortars/towed guns myself. Nothing too fancy.
But when I have longer play sessions, like weekends and such, I'd like to try my hand at doing recon/artillery spotting missions, again either alone or with small ad-hoc teams, and I'd like to ask for some quick advice and pointers regarding how to do so.
Radio communication is an obvious one. I know you carry your own radios, but I have also seen talk about radio towers being a thing. Would I be able to set those up on my own if needed? What's generally considered good practice for that sort of thing (concealment, how close/far from me/allied radio towers, etc.)?
What other gear will I need on me? I imagine extra medical supplies and small-arms ammo in case I get jumped and need to flee, as well as binoculars. What else should I be packing for a recon/spotter role? I've considered maybe a LAW/Soviet equivalent if I want to go for a slightly more aggressive recon role but I doubt I'll be doing that as much.
What's the smartest way to find and approach targets? I know running right at them in full view is pretty dumb, so going low and slow with terrain seems to be useful. What other tricks should I know about on this front?
How picky/realistic am I expected to be when calling out targets? Is it worthwhile to learn a bit of real world military language and phrasing? Or do I literally just pop on the radio, call out what and where the target is, and that's it? Probably just overthinking this one.
What other general tips/advice do I need to know? I know I have asked a lot but I really don't want to spend an absurd amount of time being a useless recon/spotter dude trying to figure things out if a few questions is all it takes to avoid that, and any advice at all is more than appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
