Caught the Weather Today

Really wish we hadn’t ignored climate change for so long. Now it’s 12 degrees above average and the news is calling 99 degrees a cool down.
Triple digits and no relief to be seen. Environmental degradation and increased drought conditions are wearing upon our physical and mental health.

Wish we hadn’t ignored climate change for so long.

Port Luck by Timothy King

Port Luck is about a small Alaskan town in the dead of winter which is attacked by a savage creature.

I was torn on this one. I bought it as a werewolf story, and I think it is, but it’s never explicitly made clear that it is a werewolf. The origin of the creature is never explained and there are no transformation scenes. You never get inside the head of the monster. It is a force of nature.

The main characters are all well-trod tropes. The military vet sheriff, the corrupt mayor and his asshole son, the old hunter, a new outsider deputy, the old country doctor, and so on. This put me off at first, but the story gets cracking and the monster is so vile that I found myself rooting hard for the humans to kill the thing.

There are a couple of plot points I thought the author skipped over and are never resolved. The ending was a surprise.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and finished it in a few days. It wasn’t flawless by any means, but for a fast-paced monster story, it fit the bill.

Wolf’s Hyde by Dylan Collins Dunbar

I’m a sucker for a werewolf story. Collins is a fairly new author, with only a couple of full length books to his name. Wolf’s Hyde isn’t one of the usual werewolf recs on this sub, so I thought I’d give it a go.

I liked it. The story kept me engaged. The MCs were interesting. Collins makes lycanthropy a curse which goes beyond the normal “turn into a hairy killing machine”. The hunt and chase from both sides of the coin were solidly written and exciting.

The protagonist is a Navajo sheriff and I pictured actor Zhan McClarnon in that role. Collins is a writer I will keep an eye out for in the future.
That said, he is still mastering his craft. An experienced reader can pick up the cues.

Come on June 17th

I’m trying to watch the local news for a weather report and I am so bombarded with political ads, it’s honestly crazy, just one after another after another, until they all blur together.

Most of them are Republican candidates savaging their primary opponents while telling viewers how pro-Trump they are.
Relief won’t come until Wednesday.

Theater Cost in This Economy

I went to watch Mortal Kombat 2 this weekend and was forcefully reminded why I do not go to the theatre but maybe twice a year at most.

Two adult tickets and two medium drinks cost $47.50. It’s outrageous and unsustainable.

Really liked the movie, btw, but with these prices it’s tough for me to support films which I like.
