The British tabloids have a favourite magic trick. They take something obviously successful, wave a headline over it, and – poof – it becomes a “disaster”. The Duchess of Sussex in Hollywood is one of their long-running illusions. According to them, her “Tinseltown dream is crumbling”, her projects are “snubbed”, and she’s apparently wandering around Los Angeles like a failed extra waiting for craft services to open.

But back in actual reality, Meghan is doing what most people in entertainment would call… thriving.

What makes Meghan’s story quietly heroic isn’t that she “escaped” the British press (I’m not sure she ever can completely escape it) but that she refused to let it define her. She refused to internalise its verdicts. She refused to perform gratitude for its cruelty and she refused to stay inside a narrative designed to break her. Extract: The Mail does not always need to tell us that Meghan has done something terrible. It can simply place her name next to something terrible and allow us to make the connection ourselves.

Extract: Critics, of course, liked it, which is … inconvenient. So the Telegraph simply pretends they don’t exist. 

It’s the same pattern we’ve seen for years: if the Sussexes do something, it must be framed as failure, even when the evidence contradicts it.

Every other week, we seem to get another story about Kate Middleton supposedly trying to repair the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry, as though she has somehow become the royal family’s resident expert in reconciliation. Yet the press rarely applies that same curiosity to Kate’s own relationships, particularly her apparent distance from her sister, Pippa Middleton.

Pippa was notably absent from Kate’s recent Christmas carol event and, perhaps even more strikingly, did not appear during Kate’s Three Peaks Challenge. Kate completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in late June, with her brother James Middleton also taking part and supporting her along the route. At the finish, she was greeted by William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Carole and Michael Middleton, as well as James.

Given how prominently other members of the Middleton family appeared, Pippa’s absence has led some royal watchers to question whether the sisters are still as close as they once seemed.

The latest development in the Jeffrey Epstein story isn’t another famous name in the files. It’s not another photograph, email or revelation about Prince Andrew.

It’s money.

More precisely, it’s the reported £2 million that was intended to help survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking. Money connected to the settlement between Virginia Giuffre and (ex) Prince Andrew in 2022.

When it was Kate it was “heartwarming,” “adorable,” and “a touching moment.” It’s only when the mixed-heritage American woman dons a toy tiara that it becomes “inappropriate” and “mocking.” 

The protocol these “experts” are describing doesn’t actually exist.

Extract: The royal PR machine has again unwrapped one of its most reliable illusions: generous royal bestows kindness on the hoi polloi. This time, the public is invited to imagine Camilla, the King’s squeeze, lovingly selecting book titles, paying for them out of her own purse, and dispatching them to children at Christmas like some aristocratic Santa.

Except … the “gift” – a free book to every child in Year 6 – isn’t from her. At all.
