The Mirror published a piece on the Charles‑Spencer‑versus‑the‑King saga, which was about how more people believed Charles Spencer’s claims than believed the king. A striking admission for a royal‑friendly tabloid. 

You’d think that would shape the tone of the article. You’d think the outlet would lean into the public sentiment it claims to have measured. But the story that follows performs a neat little trick: it acknowledges the poll, then quietly steers readers back toward sympathy for the monarch. An interesting example of media bias.

All of this is happening while Harry is a private citizen, as Britain’s king helpfully reminded us. No Sovereign Grant. No taxpayer subsidy. No palace staff organising his diary. No public money underwriting his travel or events. He’s doing the kind of “public service” the monarchy claims as its unique selling point … except he’s doing it better, more visibly, and without sending British citizens a bill.

Which brings us to the awkward question:

If Harry can do all this without public funding, why exactly are we paying the rest of them?

Royalists often insist it’s because the monarchy “provides stability”, “brings in tourism”, or “performs essential duties”. But Harry’s schedule exposes how flimsy those claims are.

One of the things we were delighted to discover from her show With Love, Meghan is that she’s a woman who loves Magic FM.  I assume that tuning her radio to Magic was one of her first acts when she returned to the UK for an extended stay. Remember Tan France teasing her about her love of the station, telling her it was what Grandmas listen to? “I’ll be that Grandma!” she declared, making Grandmas cool again the world over.

Well, when Gaby Roslin interviewed Prince Harry at the WellChild Awards, she casually suggested Meghan might do a show for the station. Um … yes please.

Prince Harry attended the WellChild Awards this week, an event he has supported for fifteen years, and the press pack arrived with him. Which is remarkable when you remember that the tabloids insist he is a “private citizen”, “irrelevant”, and absolutely not a public figure. Apparently he is so irrelevant that every photographer in London must sprint to wherever he stands, just in case he does something photogenic like look good in a suit. 

Harry’s presence at WellChild is a perfect example of something Britain pretends not to understand: public influence isn’t granted by the Crown; it’s earned by trust. The press can mock him all they like, but they still follow him, because they know the public does. He’s only been back in the UK a few weeks, but Harry has already quietly built a proper working schedule.

The argument that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “can’t claim to be private while insisting they’re public figures” is one of those very British positions that we Brits tend to repeat without examination … but which make us look like stupid tw*ts to the rest of the world. It’s delivered with the confidence of someone patiently explaining queueing etiquette to a tourist, and with the same faint air of moral superiority. The critics present it as a devastating contradiction: either you’re a public figure or you’re a private citizen. Choose one, dear. But the Daily Mail has helpfully demonstrated that this isn’t a real dilemma at all. It’s a rhetorical trap, and a rather flimsy one at that.

Because while commentators were busy mocking the Sussexes for supposedly “insisting” on their public‑figure status, the Fail was busy putting their children’s school arrangements on its front page. Not their charity work or their public statements or their business ventures. Their children’s school arrangements. If this is what Britain calls “private citizen” treatment, then perhaps it’s us that can’t speak the language properly.

This isn't an argument that Meghan is beyond criticism because she is a mixed-heritage Black woman. It’s an argument that criticism of Meghan can’t honestly be separated from the racialised hostility that has surrounded her since she entered British public life. And bearing in mind the decade of racialised attacks, what purpose does it serve to “criticise” her for, say, posting a photo of her with her children?

The story begins with a polite British fiction. For years, people have been encouraged to believe that Meghan is “unpopular,” as though public dislike were a natural weather pattern rather than something manufactured by the press. But anyone who studies media, sociology, or race in Britain knows that dislike doesn’t fall from the sky. It’s built. It’s fed. It’s repeated until it feels like common sense. And when the target is a Black or mixed‑race woman, the hostility follows familiar historical lines: suspicion, resentment, dehumanisation, and the old British favourite - “Who does she think she is?”

The evidence is overwhelming.

According to the British press, the Palace fears that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are plotting to establish a glittering alternative monarchy somewhere in the Cotswolds. A “rival royal court”, they brief, as though the couple are secretly commissioning tapestries, hiring jesters, and interviewing candidates for Groom of the Stool duties.

You can see how the sarcasm is used to pretend that cruelty is, in fact, charming. You can see how the writer invites the reader to laugh at two people who have already told us the cost of being mocked by the press. And you can see how the Guardian, of all papers, ends up sounding like the Telegraph on a rushed deadline.

The Duchess of Sussex has been attacked by all sorts over the years. Loudmouths, has‑beens, professional contrarians, and people who seem to treat cruelty as a hobby. And when you line them up, one after another, something becomes painfully clear: the louder the hatred, the darker the mess behind the person shouting. It looks an awful lot like a pattern - the more vicious the commentary, the more troubling the commentator.

Let’s start with Laurence Fox. He’s spent years barking at Meghan with a kind of rage that feels wildly out of proportion to anything she’s ever said or done. And while he’s been busy calling her every name under the sun, he’s also been dealing with his own real‑world problems … including being charged under s.66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 in March 2025. Nothing to do with Meghan, of course … but it does make his moral grandstanding look rather flimsy.

Meghan carries herself like someone who was raised to treat people decently. Meanwhile, the press is busy inventing “sources”, the Palace is leaking and briefing, and a handful of self‑appointed patriots are online calling her every vile name under the sun. All because she dared to marry the white prince they once claimed to love and swore to protect after Princess Diana was killed.

Prince Harry described starting at Eton (a “shock”) and the general experience of being watched at Eton. A recent scholarly analysis of Spare notes that Harry recalls press intrusion beginning very early in his Eton years. If the tabloids have successfully convinced the non-thinking public that George welcomes this kind of press intrusion, then I worry that the deal they once struck with Diana won’t hold, and George will live under the kind of scrutiny his uncle did.

Diana fought tooth and nail to keep her boys’ school days as normal as possible. She didn’t want them turned into props or their milestones treated as competitive media events. She certainly didn’t want their privacy reframed as a punishment.

But here we are, in 2026, watching social media follow the press’s line that it would be outrageous and so unfair if the Sussexes were to accidentally “overshadow” a school run.

Chris Ship’s reporting makes clear that the real issue now is security. Palace sources told ITV that the letter simply clarified Harry and Meghan’s status, while sources in Prince Harry’s camp suspect the Palace timed its release to coincide with the RAVEC process.

According to Ship, RAVEC members are due to meet this week to reassess the Sussexes’ circumstances now that their home and children’s school are in Britain. He reports that the committee will also consider whether any protection should extend to Meghan, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Harry’s team says the current arrangement, which amounts to access to a police liaison officer, provides no physical protection. The Duke is seeking a police presence for his family, arguing that the threats linked to his position, military service and public profile did not disappear when he stopped carrying out royal duties.

That timetable now appears to have shifted. Sky News, citing the Press Association, now reports that RAVEC will not meet today as first expected. The committee still plans to meet later this week.

That means the central question remains unresolved for now. When RAVEC meets, it will consider whether to grant taxpayer-funded security to Harry, Meghan, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet now that the family lives in Britain.

JP ignores all the other possible reasons for Charles sending that letter, and just makes Charles look small. Extract:

One imagines Pa hunched over a desk, leaky fountain pen in hand, muttering, “This will show them,” before dispatching a letter so petty it could rival Prince William. The King of the United Kingdom, a man with actual constitutional responsibilities, has taken time out of his day to remind the nation that two people who left the family firm in 2020 are, er, still not working for the family firm.

The BBC has rejected complaints from audience members who argued that its news coverage devoted excessive airtime to the Sussexes’ return with their children. The broadcaster did not reveal how many people complained, but defended its reporting as “proportionate,” pointing to the significance of the move and the questions surrounding security, family relations, the British press and what roles Harry and Meghan may take on in the UK.

The 1990s had already produced a string of royal sex scandals. Leaked intimate phone calls, adulterous confessions, paparazzi photos. By the time 2001 arrived, the monarchy had spent a decade in a rolling cycle of sexual embarrassment. But from 2001 onwards the allegations were no longer merely salacious; they were criminal. They involved trafficking networks, vulnerable young people, and questions of institutional accountability that no amount of royal mystique should have been able to soften.

Yet the monarchy remained untouched. Not morally, of course – the moral damage was immense – but structurally, financially, constitutionally.

The press has been moving the story away from abuse and potential criminality and towards lifestyle, entertainment and gossip ever since he was “punished” by King Charles by having to move into a smaller house.

This didn’t happen overnight. The British press didn’t suddenly wake up one morning and decide it outranked the monarch; it was trained into that belief by decades of royal dependence, silence, and strategic cowardice.

The wording was perfect. Not “The King is dead,” but the more plausible, more tabloid‑coded:

Familiar Fail royal correspondent style. Breathless, vague, and hedged with the classic tabloid get‑out clause  “reports are emerging.” This is the Daily Mail’s favourite construction. It doesn’t assert, it suggests*.* It doesn’t verify, it gestures vaguely at unnamed sources. Whoever posted it certainly understood the genre.

If this was a hack – and the speed with which English was able to post a response suggests she may never have been locked out of her own active session – then it was a hack executed with a tabloid ear.

"The racial element is what makes the argument so striking. Archie’s skin colour, a subject that should never have been fodder for speculation in the first place, becomes a tool for disciplining his parents. The logic is: if racism occurred, why didn’t you behave in the way I think victims of racism should behave? It’s a demand for performance, not justice. A demand that the Sussexes demonstrate their moral cleanliness by rejecting the very thing they were denied. And if they don’t, well, that tells us something about them, doesn’t it?

The standard being applied is so bizarre it borders on the surreal. Imagine telling any other family: “If your child was subjected to bullying (for example), you must renounce every connection to the institution in which it happened, otherwise your complaint is invalid.” It’s the kind of logic that would collapse under the weight of its own absurdity if it weren’t propped up by the cultural scaffolding that surrounds the monarchy. A scaffolding in which titles are simultaneously meaningless and sacred, symbolic and binding, irrelevant and essential. The Sussexes are expected to treat them as both poison and antidote, depending on the day’s column.

What Tominey’s argument ultimately reveals is the peculiar demands placed on people who speak about racism in Britain."

Massie didn’t simply repeat what we already knew. He escalated it. The allegations against Andrew have always lived in a strange media limbo. Acknowledged, but softened; reported, but reframed; serious, but treated like a PR problem rather than a criminal one. 

What Massie did was different. He used the language of criminal liability. He placed Andrew in the category of co‑conspirator, a term with legal weight and prosecutorial implications. He stated that crimes were committed on US soil. He demanded transparency from the Department of Justice. He did all of this in Congress, where speech is protected and cannot be sued into silence.

That’s not the same as the familiar “Andrew had a friendship with Epstein” line the UK press has been recycling for years. It’s not the same as the palace’s preferred framing of “embarrassment” or “poor judgement”. It’s not the same as the Newsnight interview, which much of the press treated like a PR disaster rather than a confession. Massie’s intervention is a shift from scandal to potential criminality, from palace management to congressional oversight. (While Andrew has been arrested in the UK, he hasn’t been arrested for sex crimes, but for misconduct in public office, in connection to allegations that he passed confidential information to Epstein.)
