Back in 2000, when I was fresh out of uni and broke, I got a telesales job that turned out to be a timeshare scam operation. I went to lunch on day one and never went back because I have a soul. Anyway, we were given a big list of frequent 'excuses' from the old dears we were supposed to scam, together with our expected scripted responses. Things like 'my husband just died, and he handled all the money'/'don't worry, we can handle all of that, don't you think your husband would want you to holiday in Benidorm every year?'. Hadn't thought about that until I saw this. Exact same energy.
Separating yourself from your body goes against everything I learned in professional, non woo woo, NHS trauma therapy. In fact, separating yourself from your body encourages the disassociation so many abuse survivors employed while being abused. I used to self harm as part of my dissociation, for example. I wasn't 'in my body', felt nothing, and it's wild that a tiny scratch from my rose bush has me whining like an infant these days, as my deeply scarred left arm documents my old indifference to serious pain. Granted, this quack isn't as violently anti weight loss as we're used to seeing from 'anti diet' grifters, but this is dangerous pseudoscience infesting a community of vulnerable women, where decades of sky high stress hormones often manifest as auto immune disease in middle age. It's not your body protecting you, FFS. It's a biological process that requires medical attention. Addiction is also incredibly common as a maladaptive coping mechanism, and rubbing your belly in the mirror while saying 'thank you for protecting me' isn't going to fix that. I used this account pre-therapy, freshly estranged, and very vulnerable, so it's gross that women in that same stage are being targeted with this twaddle.
When being terrified of displeasing an internet cult of strangers matters more than getting out of your own way and remedying the bulk of your annual physical discomfort. Summer isn't a random surprise. It happens every year, June to September in the Northern Hemisphere. This is why the mantra 'summer bodies are built in winter' exists. You won't go from morbidly obese to Giselle in a few months, but you'll be less miserable next Summer. Good lord.
