Roadster V3: Broken Spokes on Rear Wheel

Roadster V3: Broken Spokes on Rear Wheel

I can't recommend the Roadster V3 any more (and I was a big fan in the past).

A bike should last years and along the way will require some repairs and replacments. I'm not young and I have had 9 bikes and rode one for more than 10K miles. Bikes require work to keep going. Brakes, deraileurs, and tires, can all be replaced. A wheel is not that expensive ($150 for a solid, though heavy wheel).

The rear wheel on an ebike is one of the most painful bits to replace. A manufacturer should put effort into that one piece of the bike. The electrical system is the second critical bit.

At 1200 miles my Roadster's rear wheel started making spoke noise. Over the last 200 I have broken 2 spokes. Its not me. I am 195 lbs. I don't ride loaded.

The problem is that the wheel was not built correctly. Here you can see that the spoke head is not flush against the flange. This causes the spoke to stress at the head, which is where the spokes broke.

I am in the process of rebuilding the wheel with a new rim. Not sure why, but I don't just want to throw out the bike. But rebuilding a wheel is not something people do. A local ebike retailer said they could do it for $400 (rough guess), but was very surprised that this would happen.
