nala says "why won't he be the king i know he is" when she has only seen him for a day after missing for years? and what evidence do we even have that simba is a good king? he abandoned problems by running away and lived the stoner life with his saving silverman buddies. he doesn't even stand ground when they laugh at him for explaining the stars as past rulers. he caves and just agrees with them.

we only root for simba because the story tells us to. (not that scar is a good king either, just thinking more critically about the story)
