Left stable job just to get laid off
I used to work at a company which was very stable in the public sector. Although the pay wasn’t the most competitive, I still got daily practice with good tech stacks and had an amazing supervisor who mentored me well.
Down the line I get a dm on LinkedIn from a recruiter for a new job opportunity as a software developer 3, (before yall ask, I did try to ask for a raise/promotion at my stable job but due to economic strain, budget was tight).
I do the interview in September of 2025, and get good vibes, I even get a guarantee from the director of my future team that “this company has never had a down year, we’re projected to grow, never had a layoff, blah blah”. After the interview concludes, I wait almost 4 months …. Just to start in January of 2026.
Fast forward a week ago, I get laid off due to the classic “restructuring of department.” Even though my tenure was short, I did accomplish a lot so I’m happy with the skills and experience I got during the time.
I’m a lot less sad and bitter, but damn, it only takes a moment for someone to feel like they’re starting over again. Anyways ty for listening to my ted talk, back to applying to 30+ companies a day!
If you’re curious I have had at least a couple technical assessments and a couple phone call screening interviews with HR, but at least it’s something! The process is time consuming and soul consuming, hopefully it goes by quickly.
