Skin distribution problem in Rivals VS Overwatch
We are pretty aware that marvel rivals has a problem with skin diversity, where characters like Thor, Invis, Spider-Man, Luna, Jeff, and Psylocke get all the high quality, multi color, unique VFX skins.
The dev’s justification for this is simply “we make skins that we know will sell well” and when a skin for another character drops, the mains for that sub scramble to “buy that skin as much as possible” to show the devs that their character can sell a lot of skins as well, which hopefully incentivizes the devs to create more skins for that character.
Honestly this culture of “buy skins so the devs create more skins for our character” is super toxic, you should be buying skins that you like, you shouldn’t be incentivized to buy a skin specifically to boost some stat so you get the opportunity to get another skin to buy later down the line.
Rivals devs should just copy overwatch’s system:
Overwatch will sometimes send an email to a subset of players with a bunch of concept skins for a wide variety of characters, this includes skins for their popular characters like Kiriko, Juno, Mercy, etc. But skin concepts for their less popular characters as well.
There is an option to vote for which skins the players would like to see in game, and the most popular selections usually get added to the game down the line. I believe if the rivals devs added this to the game, it would be a “win win” scenario where the devs can put effort into skins that will sell and the players don’t feel forced to buy skins they don’t like out of fear that their character will be sent to skins purgatory.
