I received a set of four cesca chairs a few years back from grand parents. The rattan was completely redone before they were given to me, but it’s already cracking in a few spots. I’ve been Marketplace hunting and added two more (pre-broken) chairs to the set and I wanna give them a fresh look before moving into a new place. Since the rattan keeps breaking on the seat, but seems to be holding up on the back, I’m thinking about upholstering the seat and adding a thin cushion. I’ve seen a few people replace the rattan with banding and simply cover the seat frame with fabric, but I don’t like the look and would like to retain the wooden frame. Cesca chairs were produced with thin cushions, but I haven’t seen one irl. What would be the best way to add a cushion and fabric to the seat? I’ve seen someone use a router to carve a recess for a upholstered board, but I’m not thrilled about the idea of carving into the chairs.
Do you have ideas/suggestions or better yet experience with this kind of modification?
Thanks!
Edit: Im looking for a diy option if possible
