So I bit the bullet and gave this game a try and I completely understand the hype behind it. It is simple and elegant, but foundationally incredible enough to see real potential here. I know the devs are working hard to bring us content and QoL improvements, but I was thinking of different ways to help with the growth of this game without putting tremendous pressure on the devs to keep up with the demand.
A company I think does this well is LEGO. They designed this LEGO Ideas process where people build LEGO sets, submit them for votes, and then based on the results, turn the winning set into an official part of the LEGO product line. Farever devs could do this too. There are a lot of homegrown developers and tinkerers who would love to pour time and energy into this game because they love it. I think the devs should implement a sort of API baseline that allows people who want to tinker with things, to develop core functions or improvements or even cosmetics for the game using a "development" process outside of the game. Allow people to develop them, such as a minimap or a functional button, or a damage meter. The community would vote on the best function or cosmetic they like and then the devs can take it as the baseline and roll into the code through their own internal processes to ensure it doesn't break anything. This would save them time and money in the initial development cycles, but allow them to stay in control of the code baseline and implement things correctly (instead of risking mods breaking things).
I think this would be a good way to let the community that loves the game, help push it forward, taking some of the pressure off the devs, but also letting us have more direct say in how the game evolves over time. Just a random thought. Maybe it won't work, but it seemed like a decent idea.
