Production/Song details on Weathervanes that I dig
Randomly spun Weathervanes with my 5 year old while on a hike. Typed out stuff that jumped out to me but never shared years ago but we should nerd out with the like-minded
these are some of the sonic/production details I’m loving:
Death Wish- the slow build up on this tune serves as a great intro into King of Oklahoma. The last chord (6) of the song is the same as the start the next track, but then as a 2 chord (cool transition).
King- just a classic Isbell tune. Love the live feel they got here and most of the rest of the album.
Strawberry- love the “living room” immersive mix. The brushes and perc paired with multi tracked AGT gives a great atmosphere.
Middle of the morning- Love the drum groove on the bridge (quarter note on the cymbal) and guitar tones throughout. Love the many gems and subtlety of the lyrics.
Save the world- I found the super dry ride in the chorus interesting, this one’s grown on me.
Cast Iron- reminds me of Speed Trap Town thematically. Such a strong lyric. Love the accordion or whatever it is.
When we were close- Such great lyrics and meaning already sells it, but I dig the sounds used and groove. The washy cymbal in the chorus always stands out to me.
Volunteer- Great atmosphere on this one, and I love the violin harmonies. The drums dropping out in the middle chorus really points to thematic elements of the lyrics that particularly gut me (after “holding me right in her arms”).
Vestavia- reminds me of Palmetto Rose for some reason, similar groove.
White Beretta- Masterful songwriting, production, and vibes.
Miles- Epic, lot of life being transmitted in this tune.
Great through-feeling record, loved spontaneously hearing it today.
