Can you change the birthdate on your social?
For my whole life, my mother’s birthday year was 1959. All her driver’s licenses, passports, etc., had this year on it. Recently she had to get a different class of drivers license, and after some kind of deep search, they determined that her birth year is actually 1957. And she has been unable to change the license in any way shape or form. Upon further investigations, it seems like the birthday attached to her social is 1957. Bc of this her passport has also become 1957. But The birthday attached to her home countries passport is 1959. At first we just let it rock, but now - she can’t open bank accounts, she can’t go to the doctor (they reject her), and she’s having trouble with a lot of things. She’s old and senile and she thinks it doesn’t matter, but I’m gravely concerned about the implications of this. All of her existing bank accounts and investments and living trust are under 1959 and I don’t know if it puts that at risk? Perhaps they could seize assets? Her husband has passed so it’s just her and us so there’s no one she can lean on to potentially do things for her. We really need to get on changing something but I don’t know what we could change especially since the license and passport are the only outliers…
