Non-Renewed After 1st Year
Hey y'all. I'm a hs world history teacher in Florida and was non-renewed due to budget cuts. I'm in a pretty conservative county, so I think my being one of two POCs in the staff, mulleted, tattooed, etc might have factored into that decision. This is also supported by other teachers that I came to befriend expressing shock at my situation given the questionable behavior and lackluster effort of some of the other teachers in my department, but that's *mostly* neither here nor there.
I think my biggest reason in making this is post is that I feel a little lost. There is obviously much room for improvement as a teacher, but I felt that I really poured as much of my heart out as I could while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It is pretty defeating to be non-renewed 1 year in, especially given that I would have to be starting from scratch, both in professional relationships as well as content matter, should I be assigned something other than World History if I get re-hired elsewhere.
For what it's worth, I enjoyed the moments where I was able to teach the material well and break through to the students. I had felt that I was *just* now sorta-kinda getting a hang of the material/building connections with students/teachers and the prospect of starting all over really feels like a lot. I don't know if it is worth to have to climb the mountain again at a different school or if should look to other jobs.
I'm not necessarily looking for advice on "what to do", but if anyone has any thoughts/pointers/perspectives on my situation I would be very grateful!
Edit: For context, I was not the only first-year hire in my department (the other first-year teacher did not have any prior teaching experience compared to my 2 years of being a substitute). There was also a teacher hired a few months to replace a recently retired teacher. So while it might be silly to say like "haha mullet", I do believe that how I present myself in an incredibly conservative county did play into being non-renewed! To those of y'all that have offered encouragement to look elsewhere, I will definitely do that! Appreciate the support!!
