Hi everyone,
I’m a paleontologist, but apart from sharks I’m only really confident with vertebrate skulls and long bones.

Apparently (cervical) vertebrae besides 1&2 are where my confidence ends, so I’m looking for someone who’s a better vertebrate paleontologist, anthropologist, archaeologist, or anatomist than I am.

This cervical vertebra comes from a Pleistocene gravel pit in Germany. The deposit is predominantly Pleistocene, but Holocene material is regularly dredged up as well, including archaeological remains ranging from the Stone Age to the Late Middle Ages.

At first glance, I thought it might be human. The vertebral body is quite gracile (roughly 15 × 20 mm), and the spinous process is very thin and appears to have been nearly horizontal before breaking off. That immediately reminded me of a human cervical vertebra.

However, the articular facets seem noticeably steeper than in modern human C3–C6 vertebrae when I compare them directly with reference material, which made me hesitate.

I’d really appreciate any opinions on the identification and, more importantly, the anatomical features that support your conclusion. Thanks!

Mönchengladbach: Mutmaßlicher Rohrbruch entpuppt sich als illegale Cannabisplantage mit 1.000 Pflanzen

Ein vermeintlicher Wasserschaden hat in der Nacht zu Montag zu einer überraschenden Entdeckung geführt. In einem leerstehenden Mehrfamilienhaus stießen Einsatzkräfte von Polizei und Feuerwehr auf eine professionell betriebene Indoor-Plantage.

Stark riechende Flüssigkeit verrät illegale Zucht
Ein aufmerksamer Bürger hatte gegen 01:20 Uhr eine aus dem Gebäude austretende Flüssigkeit gemeldet und einen Rohrbruch vermutet. Als die Beamten und die Feuerwehr das Haus betraten, stellten sie fest, dass es sich um Abwässer einer großflächigen Drogenzucht handelte. Neben den Pflanzen war das gesamte Gebäude mit einer professionellen Be- und Entlüftungsanlage, einer automatischen Bewässerung sowie einer komplexen und gefährlichen Verkabelung zur Stromversorgung ausgestattet. Auch ein provisorisch eingerichteter Wohnbereich wurde im Haus entdeckt.

Stromabschaltung für einen ganzen Straßenzug erforderlich
Unter polizeilicher Aufsicht baute eine Spezialfirma das gesamte Equipment ab. Insgesamt wurden rund 1.000 Cannabispflanzen in fortgeschrittener Wachstumsphase beschlagnahmt und anschließend vernichtet. Aufgrund der unsachgemäßen und hochgefährlichen Verkabelung im Gebäude musste der Energieversorger NEW das Haus komplett vom Netz trennen. Für diese Maßnahme war es erforderlich, den gesamten angrenzenden Straßenzug kurzzeitig komplett stromlos zu schalten.

Die Kriminalpolizei hat die Ermittlungen zu den Betreibern der Anlage aufgenommen. Es wurde ein Strafverfahren wegen des illegalen Anbaus von Cannabis über die gesetzlich erlaubte Menge hinaus eingeleitet.

My girlfriend works in grassland vegetation monitoring in western Germany. The survey plots are permanently marked with metal nails driven into the ground. Years later, the plots are relocated using metal detectors, allowing researchers to record the same area and compare changes in species composition over time.

During one of these routine surveys, two unexploded projectiles were discovered instead of the expected marker nails. They appear to be rifle grenades or a similar type of small military ordnance, possibly dating from the Second World War or the immediate post-war period. The objects were not found during relic hunting or metal detecting for historical artifacts, but as an accidental discovery during ecological fieldwork.

Could anyone help identify these projectiles? I am worried about them and would like to know if it would be the best to quit that area.
