Fractional CFO for the win!

Fractional searches in South Africa vs the USA. Clearly, the CFO role is trending locally, but overall, the USA seems more open to fractional leadership across a broader spectrum of functions.

Fractional what?

The funny thing is that in South Africa, many jobless professionals call themselves Fractionals, yet very few companies locally are looking for a Fractional.

It ties into a very specific market dynamic:

  • There's an oversupply of talent within general management, which means you can just as well employ a full-time person at a lowish salary.
  • The business climate is generally conservative
  • SMEs are rarely aiming for breakout growth; instead, they serve as a retirement plan for the founder.

The result is a weird disconnect between a global trend and a local reality.

Slow pickup

It is quite fascinating how slowly the fractional trend is developing in South Africa. And when you dive into these results, you notice that the search term "fractional" mostly relates to industrial and scientific uses.

South Africans are so good, and so cheap!

This post caught my eye on LinkedIn.
Apparently, South Africans offer great quality and a low price. I guess it makes for a great business case to use a fractional based in South Africa!

Do South African businesses understand the term “Fractional”?

Spoke to someone recently who said local businesses don’t understand the term and have decided to use another term. Can’t recall what. Wondering what others experience?

UK Roles for SA Fractionals: Global Opportunity or Regulatory Trap?

Can South Africans apply for UK-based fractional roles? The general sentiment seems to be: "Just invoice in ZAR, get paid in ZAR, and declare it here. No stress."

But is it that simple?

What about IR35 (Off-Payroll Working) rules?

  • The "Zero-Rated" Myth: Many believe that if you are an independent contractor, you simply provide a zero-rated VAT invoice, and the UK company is off the hook.
  • The IR35 Shadow: In reality, the UK’s IR35 rules (updated again in April 2026) can sometimes force a status determination on overseas contractors if the UK company has a local presence.
  • Employment vs. Contractor: There’s a huge difference between being a "Consultant" (clean) and a "Disguised Employee" (tax nightmare).

Has anyone navigated a UK fractional engagement? How did you structure the contract to stay "Outside IR35" while living in South Africa?

The Great Remuneration Debate: Time, Responsibility, or Risk?

I was following a fascinating debate in a local fractional circle recently about how we actually price ourselves. There seem to be three distinct schools of thought:

  1. The "Fractional Plus" Model: You take a pro-rata slice of a full-time salary and add a "Risk Premium" (roughly 30%–50%) to cover the fact that you have no job protection, no leave pay, and you’re invoicing on a wing and a prayer.
  2. The "Responsibility" Model: This one is controversial. The argument is that if you hold the responsibility of a CXO, you should be paid the full-time salary regardless of your "time in the passageways." Essentially, the client gets above-market skill for a below-market budget, and you just work fewer hours.
  3. The "Consultant" Trap: Many fall back into value-based fees or hourly tracking, but some argue this strips away the "executive" nature of the role and turns you back into a standard contractor.

The big question for the room: Is asking for a full-time salary for part-time presence a "commercial non-starter" in the current South African economy? Or is "costing time" the very thing that is holding the fractional movement back?

Also... has anyone else noticed these wild 2-year non-competes popping up for 6-month gigs? How are we handling those locally?

Let’s hear your approach to the "Risk Premium" vs. "Responsibility" debate.

The "Fractional" barrier in SA: Is it hot air or the future?

I was reading an interesting piece today about why the fractional model isn't exploding as fast in South Africa as it did in the US or Europe.

The author pointed out that while the opportunity is huge for companies to access top-tier talent without "breaking the bank", we are still hitting some very local walls:

  • Institutional Friction: Most of our local legal contracts, HR benchmarks, and background checks are still built for a traditional 5-day-a-week employee.
  • The Trust Gap: Many SA business owners still have a lingering need for "control"—they worry that a fractional leader will be handling multiple organisations at once.
  • The Economic Reality: With tough trading conditions and load shedding, some SMEs are hesitant to invest in any high-level leadership, even on a fractional basis.

What do you think?

For those already doing the work, are you finding that companies "get it," or are you spending 80% of your time just explaining what "fractional" actually means?

Let's talk about the practical friction of the SA market.

Welcome to r/FractionalSA – The home for South Africa's Fractional Economy

Hi everyone! 🇿🇦

I noticed that while the global "fractional" movement is exploding, South African professionals didn't have a dedicated space to talk about the unique challenges of our local market. So, I decided to start r/FractionalSA.

What I hope this community becomes:

  • Rate Transparency: A safe, anonymous space to discuss what we should be charging in ZAR (and how to bill international clients).
  • Local Compliance: Navigating SARS, provisional tax, and BEE as a solo executive or specialist.
  • Lead Sharing: Helping each other find high-impact gigs within the SA startup and SME ecosystem.
  • The "Solopreneur" Reality: A space to talk about the mental side of the game—the pressure of finding the next gig, the loneliness of remote work, and how to stay motivated when you're the only one in your "office."

A bit about me: I'm launching this as a passion project to help us connect and grow the fractional model in South Africa.

I’d love to hear from you:

  1. What is your fractional niche? (e.g., Fractional CMO, CFO, HR, etc.)
  2. What is the biggest hurdle you’re currently facing in the SA market?

Welcome!
