Time for another monthly round up post!
The Toxic Yuri VN Jam 2 on itch concludes in July, and it features almost 500 entries. That's right, almost 500 yuri VNs! Obviously enough I'm not going to go through every single one of them here. I was planning on at least posting the winners here, but the judging is still ongoing. I highly recommend checking out the game jam if that's your cup of tea.

PSA: It Looks Iris Odyssey Isn't Yuri
The yuri status of this title is in doubt for now.
Despite having an LGBTQ+ tag and definitely having some bait CGs, it would appear that the newly released game Iris Odyssey isn't yuri according to the early reviews. It seems more like a little sister-big sister situation.
Hella Yuri is likely to weigh in soon, but I wanted to get ahead of it in case anyone was going to buy it. The good news is, if you only wanted to read it for yuri, returns on Steam are pretty easy.
UPDATE: I think we can upgrade it from "doubtful it has yuri" to "doesn't have yuri," as per this review. Here's the yuri-related excerpt:
>There’s an image that’s been used in the promotional materials a lot that made it look like it was a yuri story with a disconcerting romance between a 12-year-old and a 22-year-old. I was hopeful that the found family story, in which a mage takes in an orphan girl whose brother has gone missing, wasn’t scaffolding for yet another questionable romance tale, but I wasn’t sure. I felt that it was worth investigating.

I have to agree with that age difference it's probably better that this isn't yuri. On the plus-side, the game does seem to have at least one trans character -- that's probably why the dev gave it the LGBTQ tag.

Set Yourself on Fire is an English-language kinetic (there are no choices) yuri visual novel that came out on April 24th, 2026. It was developed by Denhop, and it's available for free on both Steam and itch. It's short, and only takes a couple of hours to read.
This game does feature some bloody violence as well as suicidal ideation. It's not really for the faint of heart. There's cute yuri to be sure, but the setting is grim.
PREMISE:
It's never fully elaborated on, but the game appears to take place in some sort of alternate history in the United States, where there is a war being fought on American soil in the 1980s or 1990s. In spite of this harsh environment, two depressed and seemingly hopeless high school girls meet and fall in love.
CHARACTERS:
Alex is a bookworm with a difficult family life who likes to roam around the town, even at night, to avoid going home.
Michelle also likes to read, though she prefers nonfiction. Her father was drafted, and she's all alone at home. She works at a diner to make ends meet.
WRITING:
An example of the game's writing style.
The author uses lots of prose, and at times I would say it is purple. The two girls have conversations that are fairly unrealistic, with deep philosophical implications, and in a lot of visual novels it wouldn't fit.
That said, for the most part it somehow works. These two girls are living in a terrible situation. That situation permeates all aspects of this visual novel, so you really feel embedded in this melancholic and hopeless world. So it's somewhat believable that they would be having such serious conversations.
Furthermore, the character-writing is quite good. Alex and Michelle gradually falling in love and finding hope in one another is especially beautiful to behold.
YURI CONTENT:
This game focuses on a relationship between two women, and it features many sweet and touching scenes between them. For me, that means it as about as yuri as it can get.
ART:
This is perhaps what sets this visual novel apart the most as this yuri VN looks and feels unlike any I've ever read. The art helps establish a warm, cozy aesthetic, while somehow also being depressing. It uses 3D rendered sprites that aren't especially detailed, but they're also very expressive despite that lack of detail. People in it kind of remind me of LEGO figures.
Many of the backgrounds are breathtaking and animated, so that you can see the rustling of leaves and other aspects of nature. The sprites are also sometimes animated, and any time they are it's a real treat.
The game uses all kinds of interesting compositions, too. This isn't a VN where the text is always just at the bottom of the screen. In fact, it usually isn't. It can appear just about anywhere, and the compositions are effectively used to set different moods and convey different messages. While the game doesn't have traditional CGs -- most of them just use sprites and backgrounds -- the different compositions do make those scenes feel special.
Reading it feels very dynamic.
MUSIC:
Just as the art and writing establish a melancholic, cozy atmosphere, so too does the music. It's suitably melancholic when it has to be, but there are also some intense tracks for the more emotionally impactful scenes, as well as some heartwarming ones for the cute scenes between the two women.
TO SUM UP:
Biggest Strength:
- Unique atmosphere and aesthetic
- Emotional, heartfelt storytelling.
Biggest Weaknesses:
- The prose and writing sometimes feels unrealistic for a pair of high school girls. They sound like philsophy graduate students.
Summary: The various aesthetic aspects of the game establish a unique and powerful atmosphere that is somehow cozy and depressing at the same time, which is perfect for the story. This is probably the best free yuri visual novel there is.
OVERALL SCORE: 8/10 ("Very good" on VNDB)
