Lifelong windows user finally converted
Finally did it, after years of trying Linux sporadically, going back to the free Ubuntu Edgy Eft CDs just to mess around with conky/compiz and beryl to get the vista aero goodness .
Discovered immutable KDE and its the perfect fit for me.
One blocking point that prevented the switch was the horrendous font rendering for which i spent hours trying to find a solution. At the end, I found out it was my 24" 1080p monitor that was very very badly rendering fonts and windows was only slightly better. After switching to a 27", the issue was completely gone. I spent countless hours trying all kind of fixes and... it was the damn screen.
Switched progressively to open source apps on windows so the OS switch was pretty smooth.
I admit that compared to years ago, IA is a big helper on fixing issues, it helped me set up Google Drive rsync on Kinoite (with a webdav mount), solving access setup for flathub apps... its amazing and so efficient instead of looking for forum posts.
KDE connect is great, I managed to set up wireless backup between phone and external HDD using FreeFileSync. My mini PC is running much more silent / fanless than on w11. KDE is amazing, Kinoite is amazing and only 2gb ram used for this, im blown away.
And now.. its almost boring because everything works perfectly. I dont feel the need to customize more than this. I kept an image of my windows install thinking i will virtualize, but now, i dont even need anything from it.
Thank you great community 😄
