My First Truck 1975 Ford F250 High Boy

I bought the truck in 1982. Two years later, the engine in my 1976 Ford F-250 Highboy gave out, so I rebuilt it with a high-compression 1969 Mercury 390. Trouble was, the gasoline back then couldn't handle it. The engine knocked and pre-detonated badly.

I found an octane additive that worked, but it cost nearly $10 to treat just 10 gallons. That was real money in 1985, and honestly, it'd still hurt today.

That headache sent me down a rabbit hole into fuel additives and fuel quality. Eventually I found a concentrated multifunctional additive that gave me the octane boost I needed for under a dollar a treatment, and it fixed a few other issues too.

One truck and one stubborn fuel problem inspired me to build my own business, FuelGuys. Forty years later, I'm still just as passionate about fuels, additives, and the chemistry behind them. This truck has been very lucky for me!

My 1975 Ford F250 High Boy - My First Truck

Back in 1984, my 1976 Ford F-250 Highboy lost its engine, so I rebuilt it with a high-compression 1969 Mercury 390. The problem was that the gasoline available at the time couldn’t handle the engine without severe pre-detonation. I started using an octane additive that worked, but it cost nearly $10 to treat just 10 gallons of fuel , a lot of money in 1985 and still is.

That experience pushed me to start searching for fuel additives and fuel quality. I eventually found a concentrated multifunctional additive that gave me the octane improvement I needed for less than a dollar per treatment while also helping with other fuel-related problems. That was the beginning of my interest in fuels, additives, and fuel chemistry.

What started with one truck and one fuel problem in 1985 gradually grew into what is now FuelGuys.
