Scenes of Kuala Lumpur Under Curfew in May 1969 as Captured by YDP Agong

These photos were taken by the then Yang Di-Pertuan Agong HRH Almarhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah in the aftermath of the May 13th riot.

An avid photographer, the late Sultan often captured scenes of public lives of his subjects back in Terengganu.

During his tenure as YDP Agong, 13th May 1969 riot happened. He was in Terengganu at the time of the incident. The-then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman declared national emergency and Kuala Lumpur was under lockdown.

When HRH the Sultan returned to KL, he was eager to capture the immediate aftermath of the incident. However, Tunku advised against so out of concern for the former's safety. Eventually he just went ahead and captured these hauntingly quiet photos of KL.

EDIT: improving some grammar...
