Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on building a character for an upcoming campaign with friends. It's a homebrew campaign from the DM set in a fantasy version of the bronze age with different civilisations and themes to explore. Between the setting and the party having no full casters (1 fighter and 2 paladins) I thought it would be fun to play a divine soul sorcerer. That way I do get access to some very useful cleric spells like revivify way before our paladins do and it offers a fair bit of flexibility. It also just appeals to me to play a character who is a priest but also needs to learn to stand up for herself in a setting where magic is weird/unknown and other aspects of the campaign. I tend to like playing more support themed characters and helping my party members get opportunities to shine.
Personality wise I was thinking of my character having grown up as somebody who is second class due to not being part of the ruling race and having less rights as a women yet having some respect as somebody who wields unknown forces. I know it isn't the most original but the idea of playing a character who needs to find ways to stand up for herself without getting into trouble and through the campaign find her own place in the world. With that in mind I think books are more sacred to her than any deity could hope to be.
I'm mainly looking for advice on how to build her though obviously the events of the campaign will influence that. I'd just like to have a rough idea for what could be fun/nice options, I'm not looking for min/max or cookie cutter builds but more ideas that would fit the vibe of the character or help her party members shine though I do want her to be able to carry her weight or hold her own.
While the sorcerer seems very versatile to build it is the first time I'm playing one and it having a very limited spell known list feels a bit daunting. With that in mind more versatile options do seem handy but I'm still somewhat unsure what to decide on. This is what I currently have in mind with us starting at level 3 and having chosen to play as a human (variant):
Starting feat (variant human): Fey touched (gets my charisma to 18) with comprehend language as spell choice so we can at least understand what people from different cultures are saying (we're likely to encounter them
Cantrips: I'm still unsure on them, I know guidance is great but the way it works feels like I'm hovering over everyone's shoulder. Currently I'm thinking about the following 4 cantrips to start with:
- Toll the dead: Seems a good damage option
- Mending: Seems limited RAW but it just seems like a way my character would give utility to her community
- Prestidigitation: Just seems too fun and versatile a cantrip with RP aspects not to pick
- Mage hand: Another versatile spell
Spells: Guiding bolt, mage armour and spiritual weapon seem great options but I'm unsure about the fourth choice. I like invisibility but this party isn't going to do well in stealth no matter what I do so perhaps earthbind to deal with flying foes or earthern grasp?
Metamagic options: Twinned spell (haste etc.) and heightened for those save spells
At level 4 I was thinking of getting minor illusion as a 5th cantrip though firebolt also seems handy in case toll the dead doesn't work. At fouth level I was also thinking of going for the ritual caster feat (detect and identify magic) as it seems to offer a lot of versatily and fits her drive to find out lost lore and new knowledge.
Does anybody have any fun suggestions on alternative options and how to grow on this as we level up? Spells like polymorph, revivify and greater restoration seem like very handy options.
