I went out on the streets to ask fans some fun Heated Rivalry questions! How would you answer them?

A couple of weeks ago a Heated Rival rave took place in Amsterdam and there I interviewed some fans, which was SO much fun to do! And because I think the questions were quite fun, I was also wondering what you all would answer to them...

The questions in this video:

  1. Describe Heated Rivalry in 3 words

  2. Would you rather have Hayden or Marleau as your teammate?

  3. Would you rather have Shane's freckles, or Ilya's curls?

Since this is just a clip, not all questions are included, I also asked them what their favorite quote was and if they'd rather party with Svetlana, or Rose, for example ;)

So feel free to answer these questions as well, very curious what your responses would be!

What would Shane and Ilya's first real date in public be?

I was just thinking about the fact that, if im not mistaken (I need to read the long game again), shane and ilya never go on a date together in public after they got "outed" (which is very fair considering they had a looooooooooooot to deal with)

This means their first real date as a couple in public will probably be as husbands in unrivaled 🥹

What do you think they would do? I think they would love to just experience things together that straight couples consider ordinary. Have dinner together at a restaurant. Go to the movies. Walk hand in hand together.

Just thinking about them doing this and not having to hide anymore, makes me emotional lol

I could also envision Ilya dragging Shane to do something crazy, though i cannot envision what hahaha

I (social psychologist) answered your Heated Rivalry questions!

A while back I asked Heated Rivalry fans across multiple platforms if they could ask a social psychologist anything about Heated Rivalry, what would they ask?

I received so many nice questions, so it took me a while to make this video, but I hope you like it! And if you want to know more about a topic, feel free to comment or send me a private message! :)

Ask a social psychologist anything about Heated Rivalry!

If you could ask a social psychologist anything about heated rivalry, what would you ask them?

Maybe you're curious about Shane and ilya's behavior, relationship, attachment, emotions? Or want to know something related to the effect that heated rivalry has had on others, on you perhaps?

The reason I'm asking this is because I am a social psychologist and for a new Heated Psychology video, a series where I apply social psychology to Heated Rivalry, I would love to answer any and all questions you might have!

So feel free to send in any questions!! I will answer them without mentioning your name but will let you know privately if i've answered your question in the video.

Do we think Ilya is gonna call Shane sweetheart in season 2? Or any other pet name?

So we know that in The Long Game, Ilya calls Shane sweetheart multiple times. Shane calls Ilya baby, and many (funny adorable) Russian petnames.

EDIT got that mixed up, Shane doesnt call ilya any pet names and all the Russian pet names also come from Ilya

Now I can definitely envision Shane with his pet names to Ilya. But I am wondering what Jacob Tierney is thinking about Ilya saying sweetheart to Shane though. Do you think he will keep it? Or have Ilya give Shane a different pet name? Or no pet name?

In the Heated Rivalry book Ilya calls Shane sweetheart once I think. But that wasn't in the show (probably also because it was not very big part of the story)

I am curious about your thoughts!!

Some of my favorite differences between the heated rivalry book and show!

Another favorite difference is of course the amazing Russian monologue of Ilya in episode 5!!! And the way the hospital scene was done I loved in the show too.

What are your favorite differences?

Things were getting a bit too heated for the subreddit..... So I made a Google Drive of all slow edits!

Link posted with mod approval

Because several of my slow edits were getting a bit too spicayyyy for reddit, I don't want to risk the future of this lovely subreddit, sorry mods for the stress :(,, I made a Google Drive with all the slow edits that I have made so far.

I will update the drive with new slow edits once season 2 is out (will notify on here when I do), and maybe I'll add a couple of new ones for season 1 too.

Feel free to share the Drive and videos around. I have added a "welcome" document, please read that before sharing and using the slow edits :)

Thanks for all of your love and support on my slow edits, I loved seeing how much you guys were into them.

Find the Google Drive here:

No, Heated Rivalry is NOT "all sex and no plot"!

Now I know messages like these are nothing new: they've been around since Heated Rivalry came out. I'm talking about messages like "just hockey smut, just sex, no plot", but I am noticing an increase in them as Heated Rivalry continues to, rightfully, win many awards and their actors as well. When Connor got his Emmy nomination for SNL, I even saw comments on there how undeserved it was for him to get so much fame from a show which was only about sex and had no plot.

And it must be because this show means so much to me, that comments like these trigger me just tremendously. Like it's not even funny anymore.

So I decided to address them in a short video essay. I talk about how the criticism is completely unfair and missing the point of Heated Rivalry and Jacob's vision. How these criticisms are completely grounded in people's heteronormative and traditional perceptions of romance stories and romance in general. And how seeing intimacy and plot as two separate things is missing the point of the storyline, as the intimacy IS the plot, and serves great narrative function.

Very curious about your thoughts on this, and I guess I'm also just seeking some reassurance that I am not the only one who gets super frustrated when they say these things.

One of my favorite scenes slowed! Shane & Ilya napping together <3

i love the shane's smile when he wakes up and seeing ilya

i love ilya fake waking up again as if he wasn't awake already

i love ilya's little nudge on shane's neck and shane immediately responding

i love how ilya throws pants at shane

i love shane's blissful pose in bed with his face in the sun and his arms up

I LOVE THIS SCENE!!

Also big thanks to u/tbgmdhc278 for teaching me how to make slow-mo edits smoother using optical flow! much appreciated :)

The second part of 1410, slowed down. Enjoy :)))))

hot hot hot alert

also,

the parallel of shane here trying to push ilya's head away vs at the cottage pushing ilya's head deeper will always be funny to me

Deep dive into Ilya's POV in Sochi and Las Vegas

I have heard many discussions around Ilya's behavior in Sochi, and in the Las Vegas scenes, especially the bathroom scene. I decided to do a little deep dive into it, and explain these scenes from Ilya's POV.

As I also mention in the video, this analysis is not me fully justifying Ilya's behavior, because I do agree he could've handled things better. With that being said, I also realize that the show (and book for that matter) is mostly Shane's POV, so we as a viewer/reader are more inclined to empathize with him.

Very curious about your takes of Ilya during these scenes. Either way I think there is so much more underneath Ilya's surface, that I wished we could've gotten a glimpse more of throughout the show, especially in these scenes (for example the panic attack he had in the bathroom beforehand, or Ilya before the conversation with Shane and Ilya to understand his POV better). I also understand the show followed the book closely and did not have much wiggle room in that. Somewhere I do think there is also strength in being able to delve deep in a character without knowing all that is happening around them. In characters portraying so much with so little said or shown. Connor did an amazing job portraying everything that was going on within and around Ilya.

Finally, I do want to point out that at the end, when I say sure he should have apologized, because Shane took responsibility as well, that that isn't my only reason of course. Even if Shane hadn't, my response would still be yes, because that would be the most mature thing to do. But as I also mention in the video, I see the likelihood of him apologizing being very small.

Ilya in this scene and foreshadowing for season 2

Original credits to the video and inspiration of the discussion go to @ya_tebya_lyublyu8124 on instagram

What do you think goes through Ilya's mind in this moment? I think Ilya has so much trauma that he repressed and pushed down because he never felt safe enough to address it. I think now, at the cottage, after they've declared their love for each other, Ilya is finally safe and protected.

And his nervous system is realizing that he is not in fight or flight mode anymore. That he doesn't have to repress or run from his trauma anymore. And I think it's all starting to come to the surface in this moment for Ilya.

Grief, for his mother, father, and in a way also his brother that he left behind. His life in Russia.

Realization that even though he has found love, unconditional love, it doesn't magically fix things within himself.

Directing-wise it's a very good foreshadowing for Ilya's depression in season 2.

We have got to hold on in season 2.. But the journey that Ilya will be going on is his way to healing.

Shane offers Ilya safety and a safe haven that allows Ilya the space to heal.

The phone blowy scene: trust, consent, playful intimacy

I've been thinking about the "phone blowy" scene at the cottage a lot lately because (1) it's simply very hot hehe, but also (2) it raises interesting questions in me about playful intimacy and how consent is communicated in established relationships.

Shane initially says "Please stop. Later, okay?" Ilya then turns it into a playful challenge instead of simply stopping. Something that perhaps, on surface, doesn't seem in line with consent king Ilya Rozanov.

In other cases, this could feel uncomfortable, perhaps given previous movies or tv shows where intimacy was not safely portrayed, boundaries were crossed, or because of personal experiences. However this scene in HR doesn't feel uncomfortable at all while watching, and I was delving deeper into this feeling. And trying to understand it better.

I believe a huge part of it is context. By this point, we know Shane and Ilya have known each other for years, Ilya has consistently respected Shane's boundaries, and in the scene Shane isn't physically trapped or pressured; throughout the interaction Shane has the freedom to move away or stop it if he wants. Shane and Ilya also love to challenge or make deals wth each other (mostly ilya initiating and Shane eagerly participating). And we know that Ilya is a highly perceptive person and can read Shane, and his body, very well.

What we see in the phone blowy scene is a Shane who initially refuses verbally and doesn't verbally accept the deal that Ilya has given him, but then makes a very interesting choice on where to sit on the couch after Ilya proposed that deal with him. When Ilya signs he is gonna go down on him, he makes eye contact with Shane for a long time, I think so he allowing Shane time to react. And when Ilya goes down on him, Shane's body language is telling us he is enjoying it (hand on back, widening legs).

So this scene got me thinking about how much we rely on context and non-verbal communication in intimacy in (long-term) relationships.

So I'm curious:

  1. Where do you think the line is between playful teasing and nudging someone to do something out their comfort zone, and genuinely pressuring someone?

  2. What role do you think trust and safety in the relationship play in how you interpret this scene?

  3. Did this scene make you think about consent differently, not in terms of its importance of course, but in terms of how it can be communicated, and how in long term relationships the consent is sometimes more nuanced and less explicitly announced?

Hope you are not weirded out by this discussion, I just think it's a very interesting topic to discuss! And figured this would be a safe space to do so 😊
