how music makes me feel — kicking off with Mac Miller (Ros)
Hey everyone. I’ve been listening to all kinds of music for a while now, and jotting down what I feel when a song really gets me, but I’d never actually put those thoughts into words to share with anyone. I want to start doing that here, one song at a time.
I’m not trying to write technical reviews or break down production or music theory — that’s not really my strength, and honestly it’s not what moves me most about a song anyway. What I do want to do is talk about what I see between the lines: the story I think is hiding in the lyrics, what I pick up on, what it makes me feel.
Starting with **“Ros” by Mac Miller**, because it was the first song that made me feel like I actually had something to say about it.
It all starts with a question: have you ever been in love? He’s not looking for anyone’s opinion — he just needs to tell his story, good or bad. He just wants to be heard.
He takes care of her, pressures her, thinks about her all the time — to the point of feeling ridiculous, like running in heels inside his own head, just to fall in love with her all over again.
He’s been told they’re not good for each other. He doesn’t accept it. He chases a love that isn’t returned, and all he finds is a lonely rain — her, eyes glassy, on the verge of tears; him, heart out of rhythm. Something’s unresolved — and the solution he imagines is as unreal as a trip to Fiji. He loves her the way he thinks she deserves to be loved, but it’s not working.
That love turns sick — more obsession than something mutual. One line says it all: “F\*\*\* the world, it’s you and me.” But nothing lasts forever.
She waited for the next step. He never took it. And when the fear of losing her finally pushes him to make a move, it’s too late. It’s over. It ends with “my love,” left with no answer.
The read between the lines: this feels like the last conversation with the love of a lifetime — a love lost a while back, not from lack of love, but from lack of maturity to hold the relationship together.
I know my writing is still a work in progress, and it’ll probably keep changing with every song I dig into. But I wanted to share the first one of these, and I’ll keep going with more artists soon.
If anyone else does this, or has songs that feel like they “have something to say,” I’d love to check them out.
