Within days of hanging this round planter on our balcony I had a House Finch nest in it. Since then, I have had around four broods a year in it. I love watching them from my living room couch. Now that it has been many years since the nests started, they are piled almost to the top of the planter (about 11" tall).

Is it helpful to the birds to remove these old nests so they can start new at the bottom or to reduce the height? Or is it better to let them figure it out without my intervention?
