People ridicule or sneer at you as a form of social policing to enforce social norms. People have the tendency to regulate status in their minds because it makes interactions predictable, prevents conflict and creates group cohesion. This pretty much lowers cognitive load required because engaging the brain for every interaction is very mentally taxing. Your percieved social status will determine your expected behaviours. To diverge from expected behaviours without ‘proper credentials’ will result in people trying to ‘put you in your place’ to pull you back down. They guard this social hierarchy so adamently because your freedom from the chains of their opinions and blatent disregard of the ‘authority’ of the social hierarchy devalues their worth or place in the social hierarchy that they worked so hard to achieved to get to act a certain way.
