Canadian Football’s Quirky Playoffs, Part I: Tie Schedules and Challenge Cups in 1884

Hi everyone. I've been exploring some of the different playoff formats used in the CFL and early Canadian football. For those interested, here is the first article. This one takes a look at 1884. That's the year the Canadian Rugby Football Union was founded and the first time a national championship was held.

The playoffs in Ontario and Quebec (who were the only two provinces who were a part of the CRFU) are a bit odd. It was all rather informal and they used what was called the Tie Schedule and had challenge cups. Definitely a little different than what we are accustomed to.

Thirty years ago today, Dave Ridgway aka Robokicker retired after playing 14 seasons in the Canadian Football League. He played a whopping 238 games in the CFL, all with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
