I am a grade 12 as of current and am heading into public health, co-op in the fall. Now originally I applied for multiple programs at UW that revolved around healthcare. (Honour sci & life sci) at that time I was NOT feeling like being at high school anymore, I done so much extracurriculars I just felt burnt out. So it was hard to keep up with my harder courses and even though my grades were good they were discouraging so I dropped the courses and quickly changed my whole plan. I REFUSE to ever stress about something if I can make a plan around it.
My thought process was, why stress about my grades and getting into my desired program now, when I could always switch into it later..?
I got into all the programs I applied to, which all had easy requirements and I was certain I’d get in. But now I know that public health really isn’t for me. I very very very much prefer patient interaction and hands on skills. I want to physically see the impact I make and I enjoy fast paced environments. My current job has shown me that. Another reason I no longer am interested in this program is because another student has discouraged me from it. They said you can only really get a job if you get your Masters.
I want a program that will give me a lot of opportunities to do things that I’ll enjoy doing and discover what my future career is going to be.
POINT IS Has anyone ever switched programs, any advice on how soon I should do it, is there any risks/costs? Should I pick my courses in June knowing I plan on switching programs? Any public health students that can advocate or inform me about the program further?
Thank you!
