Can someone please explain to me how to use play cards that you get in top plays or rewind to boost your player attributes, so for example what do I do with these to boost mitchell?

Quitting after scoring

I've been experiencing a lot of guys who will score the first couple of points and then quit and then I get game lost, how are they doing this because I tried it once just to see how it works and I didn't seem to get the number of fans they do (I'd play the same guy back to back and write down the amount of fans we'd both have before and after )
