Pretty much my question as how it is applied and where, it is a flat amount that reduces damage? Its %?

Also how its calculated after or before the damage? (I get that the norm in most games is to first calculate the damage and then reduce it using defense modifier) I had this weird question because I went from being one shoted to recieve 6 damage with only 30 extra defense.

How it is the damage applied? Lets say I use a 30 defense helmet that its just a bard hat the design of it affects how the damage its applied? Would I make more damage if I throw a spear to the uncovered face rather than the upper head or covering the full face affects the incoming damage? Also, what defense is applied to the neck?

Edit: also a question nothing to do with the game itself but are there any games similar to Mount and Blade? Ever since I played the first game almost 20 years ago I never found any game similar to this.
