I’m currently a third-year B.Sc. Computer Science student at Yashwantrao Mohite College (BVDU) in Kothrud, and I’m looking at my options for post-grad. I’m specifically interested in the M.Sc. Data Science program at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Department of Computer Science (PUCSD) for the 2027-2029 batch.
Since I’ll be coming from a different university (Bharati Vidyapeeth), I’d love to get some honest feedback from the SPPU community about making the jump:
The Entrance (CUET/SPPU Entrance): Since I'm coming from YM, how should I best prepare for the entrance exam? Is the syllabus strictly aligned with SPPU’s B.Sc. CS curriculum, or should I be focusing more on competitive-level Mathematics and Logic?
The "Outsider" Transition: How is the experience for students who didn't do their undergrad at SPPU? Is the culture at PUCSD welcoming to students from other universities in Pune?
Specialization Value: For those with a B.Sc. CS background, do you feel the M.Sc. Data Science curriculum at the university provides enough specialized depth in AI/ML, or is it better to stick with the general M.Sc. CS?
Placements & Industry Tie-ups: How does the placement cell handle the Data Science batch? Do the companies coming to campus for "Day 0" or "Day 1" differentiate between CS and DS students for roles like Data Engineer or ML Engineer?
Lab & Research Culture: What is the current state of the labs and computing resources for DS students? Is there a lot of encouragement for research projects?
I’m trying to decide if I should make the University Department my top priority for my post-grad entrance exams. Any insights, tips, or "heads-up" advice would be incredibly helpful!
TL;DR: 3rd year CS student at YM (Kothrud) looking at SPPU for M.Sc. Data Science (2027-29). Is it the right move for an external student?
