I have tenants in a house and they said they smelled a gas leak. I called our utility company NOPFA to shut off the gas. I then called a plumber to have the problem fixed. They said since it was the weekend they couldn't fix it and that it would have to wait until Monday.
Monday comes and they tell me that it is going to be a $4,000 fix, stating that they have to redo the main gas line, and that they need to do work on the water heater and add new shut off valves to the appliances. I told them I can't afford $4,000 and that I need them to fix the gas leak I called about. Keep in mind that at this point no leak test was performed. They then come back with a $2,900 offer and I asked them what it was they would be doing. They weren't clear at all as to what they were doing and started talking to me about a water heater entrapment. I then said that I called them to fix a gas leak and asked if they found it to which they replied that they haven't done a leak test yet.
I get a call back again later on Monday saying that they have found the gas leaks and that they can fix them for $975. I agree to this. They then told me that I had mentioned selling the house in an earlier phone call (I didn't at all) and that their boss is interested in buying my house. After explaining to him (frustratedly) that I called them to fix a leak and that now their boss is offering to buy my house and this is making me upset - I just want them to fix the gas leak I called about.
Now today (Tuesday) they then tell me that they did some kind of overnight pressure test on the gas and that it wasn't holding pressure so there was apparently a "miniscule leak" (their words) they didn't detect on the 15 minute test so they did another test. This time they found another leaking appliance.
They said that tomorrow they'll have it fixed and have a home inspector come look at the house, but I have a feeling they're going to tell me some kind of story about how they need to do something totally unrelated to the reason I called or that something odd is going to happen.
Not really sure what's going on here. I'm willing to answer any and all questions.
