New to camping, trying to figure out the safest/cheapest sleeping option

Hi guys! I have been wanting to start solo camping for a while now, but am not sure what the safest option is.
I’m willing to buy a tent and bear canister, but I don’t have a lot of money right now so I’m looking for other options. My next thought is just car camping, but I have a soft top jeep and am not sure is that would be safe. Right now, I would be camping in the Midwest where there is not a lot of bears, so I feel like remote camping in a soft top wouldn’t be dangerous (confirmation on this would still be appreciated, though!). However, I am going to be in the Colorado area (CO + Wyoming, Montana, Utah, etc) and am nervous about bears. Does anyone know if it’s safe to sleep in the back of a soft top? Does it depend on if I have food, and if so could i just buy a bear canister and not a tent (again hoping to save money right now)?
