Rehoming budgies DMV area
Hello friends.
I have come to the realization that I NEED to lessen my load…I have too many things goi going on in my life for a long while now and have been in a near constant state of stress for years.
After a power strip caught fire in my apartment this evening, leading to having to quickly try to catch my flock-in the dark-to evacuate out of their room that was filling with smoke….I am finally at a point where I can’t ignore that I NEED to downsize several areas of my life immediately. I can’t drag my feet any longer.
I LOVE my budgies and if you have seen my posts over the years, you know I have gone above and beyond for them. But I desperately need to downsize my flock. I currently have 12, which didn’t seem that unmanageable, but due to every other area of my life being overloaded, I haven’t properly been able to keep up. And then with five of them dying over a three month period (nothing contagious, I had necropsies and it was literally just a terrible string of bad luck after bad luck…) I have been very stressed out about the remaining birds. I am drained financially and am terrified of having another big vet bill before I can recover from the last ones (I also have two very high needs horses in my care as well that have been racking up bills lately)
Now that their room filled with smoke, I am now absolutely overwhelmed about having to get the entirety of the room and their cages scrubbed down. My main cage is 12 feet long and will need completely torn down and scrubbed, and then there’s a large handicapped cage as well….and I have no effing clue how I’m going to find time for all of this. Especially since my health has been wavering as well these past few weeks.
I want to downsize to a number and cage size that is more manageable with the new demands that have entered my life the past 6 months.
I hate this…so much. I trust no one, I fear for the wellbeing of my birds when they leave my care. I’m hoping to find new homes for some on here rather than Facebook as the Reddit folks seem to have more sanity in general and a better understanding of modern care standards.
I haven’t yet decided who I want to keep and who I will let go, but if you are somewhere within drivable distance of the DC area, and are interested in some budgies, and have a high quality home to offer….please message me. I am thinking the handicapped ones will definitely stay, though I might part with one of the girls who can fly a little and is bonded with a flighted male.
Send me a message if you are interested in budgies. I will require they go somewhere with a flight cage and free time daily, no clipped wings, no cats/dogs/other animals including other parrot species that can interact with them. Budgie experience preferred but I’ll consider a beginner who has done their research. Bonded pairs must stay together and I won’t send anyone to a single budgie home….companionship from their own kind is EXTREMELY important to them, just like with horses….I really don’t care if some sources suggest otherwise or if some people say they have had single birds that have “done fine”….I will not subject my birds to that ever.
They are not “tame” but most are very friendly and will probably be very easy to win over with some millet. Some used to land on my hand eagerly for millet but I have been so overwhelmed this past year+ that I haven’t spent that amount of time with them to keep up with that level of socialization.
Thanks folks.
