Solo-shot observational documentary in rural Thailand — looking for thoughts/advice
I’m a final-year film production student preparing to head into rural Northeast Thailand in early June for my thesis documentary, and I thought some people here might appreciate the approach or have advice.
The film is called Between Survival and Belief. It follows a smallholder rice farmer in Roi Et Province during the weeks surrounding planting season.
The documentary sits between two realities:
- the worsening drought conditions affecting Isaan,
- and Bun Bang Fai — an ancient rain-calling rocket festival still practiced every May - June across the region.
I’m not trying to make a film that argues whether belief “works” or not. I’m more interested in observing how ritual, uncertainty, agriculture, and everyday survival coexist in people’s lives.
I’m approaching it observationally:
- no narration
- minimal footprint/intervention
- natural light only
- mostly handheld
- trying to let scenes unfold naturally
I’ll be filming over around 7 days with a very small footprint using:
- A University provided Panasonic HC-X20
- Personal Canon 77D as B-cam
- Sennheiser MKE600
I’ll be handling all the cinematography, sound, and production myself, while working closely with Thai-speaking friends helping with local access and translation during interviews and conversations.
Most of my background is in documentary photography, so this is probably the most ambitious observational film project I’ve attempted so far.
Would genuinely love advice from people who’ve:
- filmed observationally for extended periods
- worked in rural communities
- balanced presence vs invisibility while shooting
- or handled language/cultural barriers during documentary production.
Since this is a student project, i’ve also opened a small Ko-fi to help support travel and production costs during filming if anyone wants to follow the journey:
