Workout frequency

I have heard people say to build muscle one must workout thrice a week but due to some discipline issues I usually workout once a week. Recently tho I had a realisation, I do calisthenics and my routine is pretty intense and i spend majority of the week recovering which then leaves a few days to squeeze and force in the other 2 workouts which mentally contributes to my discipline issues. So i was thinking of reducing the work load in order to speed up recovery to get in more sessions a week. Im not an expect on the working out technicals so i need some assistance on the matter. Which is better a less intensive workout 3 times a week or one intensive workout once per week(at most 2) in order to build muscle and burn fat.
