Can you do an English degree without a level English?

I'm really interested in doing a Philosophy and English degree, but I'm not studying a level English - I take history, religious studies, and psychology. I've found a few unis that don't require you to have taken it at a level but i don't know if it would stupid anyway to do it at degree level because I'd be so behind. I really enjoyed gcse english and got an 8 in lit and 8 in lang. I now really regret not choosing it for a level and miss it a lot but I didn't really like the texts my school study so stupidly took psychology instead. Is it worth applying or should I just stick to a subject I've done for a level? To anyone that's done/is currently doing an english degree - how difficult would it be to catch up at uni?
