i'm a student in new york city looking to apply to a music high school. i have been playing the electric guitar for about a year, and i'm looking to apply for a jazz program. what schools should i apply to outside of the typical laguardia & sinatra? i don't think i'm good enough of a player for either, though i'm still gonna apply. but, i need more.

also, is it true that for jazz auditions it's best to take a popular-ish piece and make it your own? the best example i could come up with to demonstrate what i mean is dave navarro's changes to the song "rock & roll" in the jane's addiction cover. are you meant to do something like that when auditioning?
