Help me choose a PhD offer please :)

Hi everyone,

As per my last post in this community, I’ve offers from NUS and NTU Singapore for their biological science program. I’m (24F) a BSc-MSc degree holder from China who did majority of their MS project in the US.

For context, I’m aware that NUS is more known internationally as compared to NTU, but the NTU offer is to a professor and lab that does research in my field. I’ve had a 1 hour long meeting with the PI and I feel that it is a good fit.

The stipend is 3,000 SGD at both places so not much difference on the money front. Although NTU is cheaper as per what I’ve heard. Would also be grateful to know from a current student on how much can I expect to save monthly?

If I do end up going for NTU instead of NUS, how will that affect:

  1. Postdoc applications in Ivies or Oxbridge?
  2. Chances of transitioning into Industry?
  3. Campus cultures between these two places? Work life balance?

I’d be grateful if anyone could shed some light on these questions. Even getting to know some information about these would be appreciated!

If there’s any current grad students from these places who are reading my post, please feel free to DM! I’d love to ask more questions that I have.

Thanks!

Choosing between PhD offers from Singapore

Hi everyone,

I’ve offers from NUS and NTU Singapore for their biological science program. Now, I know that NUS is a bit more known as compared to NTU, but the professor and lab at NTU does exactly the kind of work that I’m interested in.

If I do end up going for NTU instead of NUS, how will that affect:

  1. Future job prospects if I intend to transition into industry?
  2. Chances of a postdoc at Ivies or Oxbridge if I want to pivot to academia?
  3. Differences in campus culture or work-life balance between the two?
  4. Differences in international reputation or prestige between these two places?
  5. Job prospects in Singapore or Asian countries as a whole? (I’d like to go back to China as I’m originally from there)

I’d be grateful if anyone could shed some light on these questions. Even getting to know some information about these would be appreciated!
