Why is it easier to find the price of a Big Mac than a heart procedure?
Only 13% of patients look up healthcare prices before receiving care. I have a recent piece on how hospitals set prices and why transparency is challenging. There are two big holdups- one that price is hard to define in the first place, the other is that both insurers and hospitals are monopolies- not a good setting to show your (price) hand. Has anyone found that the recent hospital price transparency legislation is leading to meaningful improvements?
