Scary woman asking for help

I was just about to fall asleep at around 11:00 P.M. The entire neighborhood was quiet in that strange way it only gets late at night, where even the wind sounds louder than normal. I had already turned off my lights, plugged in my phone, and settled into bed when I suddenly heard a woman screaming outside. At first I thought maybe it was just someone arguing in the distance, but then I heard her cry out again, louder this time, sounding terrified and in horrible pain. She kept calling for someone — a man, I think — though I couldn’t fully make out the name she was yelling. The way she screamed didn’t sound fake or playful at all. It sounded desperate, like she genuinely needed help immediately.

I froze in bed for a few seconds, trying to figure out where the sound was even coming from. The screams echoed strangely through the area, making it hard to tell the exact direction. Then I heard the woman sobbing and begging for help, followed by a few strange choking or gurgling noises that made my stomach drop. After that, everything went completely silent. Not normal silence either — the kind that feels wrong, like the whole area suddenly stopped breathing.

I grabbed my phone and looked out my window, but I couldn’t see anything except darkness and the empty field beside the neighboring property. The place where the sound seemed to come from made no sense. There’s only a long concrete wall there, and behind it is just a huge open field that stretches out for what feels like forever. There aren’t any nearby houses except a few far off in the distance, and as far as I know, only women live there. No cars drove by, no lights turned on, and no one else seemed to react to the screaming except me.

The weirdest part was how suddenly it all stopped. One second the woman sounded like she was in unbearable pain, screaming and crying so loudly that I could hear every word through my closed window, and the next second there was absolutely nothing. No footsteps, no voices, no movement in the field, nothing. It felt unnatural. I even stepped outside for a moment to see if maybe someone nearby had heard it too, but the street was empty.

I ended up texting the guy who lives next door because I was too nervous to walk around outside alone. He responded almost immediately, asking what I was talking about. When I explained the screams, he got confused and told me there shouldn’t have been anyone near the wall at all because there’s literally nothing there except the field. He even checked from his side and said he couldn’t see anybody.

At that point I started feeling genuinely unsettled. My mind kept replaying the noises over and over again. The woman’s voice sounded so real and terrified that I can’t convince myself I imagined it, but at the same time, none of it makes sense. I’ve lived here for years and never heard anything remotely like that before. The silence afterward was somehow worse than the screaming itself.

Now I’m sitting in my room with every light turned on, typing this because I honestly don’t know what to think. I keep staring out my window expecting to see someone standing near the wall or walking through the field, but there’s nothing there. Maybe there’s a logical explanation and I’m just overreacting, but the whole thing felt horribly wrong. I just need someone to tell me what they think happened because right now I genuinely don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
