Deep beneath the surface of the ocean, there are regions where entire ecosystems survive without sunlight at all. Around hydrothermal vents, cracks in the seafloor release superheated mineral-rich water, and instead of relying on photosynthesis like plants on Earth’s surface, strange organisms survive through chemosynthesis — converting chemicals into energy. Giant tube worms with no mouths or stomachs live there, sustained entirely by symbiotic bacteria inside their bodies. The environment is so hostile — crushing pressure, near-boiling temperatures, total darkness — that for a long time scientists thought complex life there would be impossible. Yet these ecosystems thrive in complete isolation, almost like alien worlds hidden on Earth itself, suggesting that life in the universe may not need sunlight nearly as much as humanity once assumed.
