ACL graft, meniscus tear-had to get 2nd surgery for scar tissue clean up. Not doing well

Posting for my SO. He had ACL patellar tendon graft +2 stitches to repair medial meniscus tear in Jan. He felt pretty positive about his recovery in the first week or so but then everything started to go down hill. He said it was hard to activate his quads and sometimes felt a sharp pain on the lateral aspect of the knee (outside of knee) just below the joint line.

Because of his set backs, he found it hard to keep up with general rehab. Theres probably lots of details I could say but fast forward to now, since he wasn't recovering well the surgeon decided to do a clean up of scar tissue.

This was about a month ago. Now he's having the same pain. He also feels like there's a "bubble" in his knee when he bends. He's definitely mentally affected by this greatly. I want to tell him that it will all turn out well but we also don't really understand the cause of all these issues.

He's back on crutches, can barely walk for 5 minutes.he also complains about the knee being really achy sometimes especially when waking up in the morning. I think he's worried that all of these feelings are permanent. Anyone have any advice or experience something similar?

Did you have a longer recovery than expected but it all turned out okay in the end?
