Setting Up New Plex Server as a Novice

I have been doing some research on setting up a Plex server, but I need to check in with those who know how to do this before I make any large purchases. I am a novice, but I am determined to learn!

Current Setup:

  • Plex lifetime pass
  • Old laptop that is currently the server
  • External 4TB hard drive

I hope to access the Plex server from home as well as remotely and sharing with a couple other households.

Right now I have just some movies I downloaded years ago on the external HD, but I plan to use Sonarr and Radarr and REALLY expand the library. Goal is to cancel all the streaming services and just use this server.

Laptop specs:
Aspire E1-532-2635
Intel Celeron processor 2957u (1.4 GHz, 2MB L3 cache)
4 GB memory (I can upgrade to 8 GB)

I am willing to invest the funds needed to set up a low-maintenance, large and reliable server. I am looking at Synology, but I am not sure which one to get or if I should look elsewhere. Is my CPU good enough for what I need or does it not matter if I have a Synology or equivalent? I've seen mini's mentioned in other posts, are those better suited for what I want?

I appreciate any and all advice!
