Water drips down my face

It fills my eyes and ears, and yet-

I cannot breathe

There is a thick veil of air around me,

My gills are empty

Have I no lungs?

Wet feathers cover my face and neck

And the scales

invisible behind my back are dry and warm

Can everyone else see them?

No. They must not.

Not a word of my scales.

Only my feathers

Beautiful.

Useless.

My sisters wings, they are strong and freeing

Let them grace my spine

Let the ugly chains my brothers wear

Migrate from my skull

I cannot breathe

I cannot fly

Please.

Don’t make me swim

Cage me in air

Free me…

Free me from sound and sight

Free me from movement

Free me from breath

Please.
