What made a quality engineer instantly respected on your factory floor?

Manufacturing engineers: what separated the best quality engineer you ever worked with from the average ones?

I’m not looking for textbook answers or job descriptions.

I mean the people who could walk onto a line and immediately see what everyone else was missing. The ones who saved launches, caught impossible to find failures etc.

What did they actually do differently?

Curious whether others are seeing the same thing:

  • Are the skills that make someone exceptional becoming rarer?
  • Has the role changed over the last 5–10 years?
  • Are there things elite QEs do that newer engineers often miss?

Any stories or examples are especially appreciated.
