I hope you all don’t mind me posting on here as I’m actually a tenant but wanted to hear some landlords perspective.

My landlord is selling and we’ve been evicted. But the letting agents have been absolute arseholes about our deposit and it took 1.5 years to deposit it correctly. The more I think about the bullshit they tried to pull the more annoyed I get. My problem is all the guidance says I have to specifically name the landlord. Now I didn’t have the best relationship with him, but I have a lot of sympathy for the reason why he’s needing to sell (he’s not a business/commercial landlord, simply rented out their house with the intent to move back in later on down the line). I don’t want to go after him but it seems to be the only way to do it.

So essentially what I want to know is 1) How likely is it this was actually my landlords fault? Do most landlords have a hands off approach with the deposit? He was a stickler for the gas safety so I’m surprised he let this the letting agents screw up this badly and 2) Does my landlord have any recourse against the letting agent if I was to receive compensation?

So I’m being evicted due to the landlord selling the property and I’m seriously considering whether or not I should go down the tribunal route due to my deposit not being protected until 1.5 years into the tenancy. But I wanted to hear what peoples experiences were.

Also is there anyway to go after the letting agents instead of the landlord? All the guidance says I need to name the landlord but I actually have a lot of sympathy for her right now (especially because of why she’s selling), and it’s been the letting agents that have given us the run around. They did eventually protect the deposit in the end but I’m so annoyed at the absolute bullshit they tried to pull with it all.
